Try to walk away...

There are days that I hesitate to say what I do... in some circles the media has gained a pretty bad reputation.  We are all lumped together... local, national, and tabloid news... people see us as the same... which we are not... but I digress...

However, on days like today, I am proud to say I work in the media.  Days like today make me remember why I chose this profession... because on days like today we get to share the plight of the Haitians with the rest of the world.  Information travels so quickly, but it's the pictures that make the story so heartbreaking.  Through the media, people see these pictures and they are touched... and they give, share, and pray for all the people involved.

We provide an important public service, not just for Americans... but for the people of the world.  So I encourage you to take a look at some of the pictures... and see if you can walk away unchanged (I will guarantee you cannot walk away).

We live in a country that, even in our tight economy, has been incredibly blessed.  I encourage you to give some of this blessing away... to be the hands and feet of Jesus.  I donated to Compassion International tonight because they work directly with local churches in the affected areas.  I have compiled a list of several reputable organizations that can use our help in these difficult times.

Compassion International- They work with local churches to provide relief to children and their families
American Red Cross- You can also text your donation- Text "Haiti" to 90999- this is a $10 donation
Salvation Army- Have worked in Haiti since the 1950's- preparing to send more than 40,000lbs of food
UNICEF- International organization dedicated to helping children
Habitat for Humanity- Will work to address the need for shelter in the disaster zone
Heifer International- Helps the survivors recover by providing them with animals and farming supplies
Southern Baptist Disaster Relief- Forming teams now to head to the disaster zone
Samaritan's Purse They don't just do shoeboxes... they are already on the ground with supplies- 5 flights scheduled for Thursday

These are just a few of the many organizations working to help the people of Haiti.  One more journalism warning before I go... make sure you are donating to a reputable organization (all the ones I listed here are)... unfortunately, the bad guys like to take advantage of people in disastrous days.

Finally, please PRAY for the people and their families affected... and also the volunteers going to help.
